Plus Size Ski Clothing: How to Find Gear That Fits, Performs and Feels Great

Finding ski clothing that fits well is harder than it should be. For plus size skiers, the choice has often been limited to a handful of baggy styles or a rail of "extended" sizes that look like an afterthought. But the right clothing matters on the mountain. A jacket that rides up, pants that pinch when you bend your knees, or layers that restrict your movement can spoil a day on the slopes faster than bad snow.

Here's how to get it right.

Why fit matters more on the mountain

Skiing is an active sport in changeable conditions. Your clothing has to do three things at once.

  • Keep you warm and dry. Poorly fitting kit leaves gaps where snow and cold air get in.
  • Let you move. You need freedom to bend, reach and turn, especially when you're learning or building confidence.
  • Layer properly. A base layer, mid layer and outer shell all have to fit together without bunching or squeezing.

If any one of these fails, you'll feel it by lunchtime.

Build your outfit in layers

Base layer. A good thermal base layer sits close to the skin and moves moisture away. Choose one that's snug but not tight. Compression that's uncomfortable standing still will be miserable after a few hours of skiing.

Mid layer. Fleeces and mid layers provide your insulation. Because you can add or remove them as conditions change, they give you the most flexibility. Check that the sleeves and torso have enough room to sit comfortably over your base layer without restricting your arms.

Jacket and pants. Your outer layer is your protection from wind, snow and wet weather. Look for proper waterproofing and breathability, adjustable cuffs and hems, and enough room to wear your mid layer underneath. If you're unsure what the waterproofing ratings mean, our Waterproofing Explained guide breaks it down in plain English.

Check your sizes properly

Sizing varies between brands, so a size you wear in one label won't always match another. Before you buy, check the Clothing Size Guide and measure yourself rather than guessing. A few minutes with a tape measure can save you the hassle of a return.

A few tips:

  • Measure over light clothing, not over bulky layers.
  • Think about movement. Sit, squat and raise your arms in the garment if you can. If it pulls, go up a size.
  • Allow for layering. Your jacket needs to fit over a mid layer, not just over a T-shirt.
  • Check lengths as well as widths. Sleeve and leg lengths matter just as much as chest and waist.

Don't forget the leg length

Even the right waist size can leave you with pants that are too long, bunching over your boots and soaking up snow at the hems. That's why we also stock short leg pants for both women and men, so you can get a better fit without having to get a tailor involved.

The bottom line

You shouldn't have to compromise on warmth, comfort or style because of your size. Take your measurements, check the size guide, layer sensibly and choose pieces designed for the job. When your clothes fit, you stop thinking about them and get on with enjoying the skiing.
